I am a fan of the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer and fast becoming an ardent fan of the supernatural world that she fascinatingly created in her imagination. As a closet writer like myself, it offers hope that fiction can become reality somehow if they inspire lots of people to dream their dreams even if it involves a darker world than what we live in. Imagination has no reins and it only strengthens the possibilities of the human soul. You know when something from you has become real for others when they believe what you have spawned in your mind. Its what most artists are after – euphoria.
Reading and watching the Twilight and New Moon flick and it can enthrall you to think that the main characters exist somewhere. Crafted to provide a modern tale of star-crossed lovers in a world not described far from our own, it can keep you engage even if the plot can sometimes be predictable. It is how the interaction of the varied characters that kept me hook.
Another fine point of the story is how the Bella character can suffer both great love and pain being the main heroine. Although being the protagonist, she can create conflicts within herself that can be self-contradictory and amusing at the same time. This self-contradiction she has is muted by her lover Edward who seem to keep himself amused by her human frailty and conditions. And hey, the me-and-you against many worlds is a modern day Romeo and Juliet play that can prove that indeed love (even between a red-blooded human and that of a bloodsucker) conquers all and that love and soul can never be apart.
The main theme for the fiction is paradox. And like most human nature, exploring the extremes of any condition is an addictive feat. It is worth the read AND watch even if its a brink of high commercialism.
